Fragile hands – TIMO HERBST

In the series “Fragile hands” I work mainly with two
motifs: intimate touching as personal gestures and
constellations of human bodies gathered for different
reasons in public space. The type and form
of body movement separates the people visually.
The formation of the hands grasping and reaching
towards each other has similarities to the formation
of a group. A touch is an intimate sign between
humans belonging within the private sphere.
The division of a group by a certain posture (e.g.
kneeling as a prayer position) works as a sign in
public space. In this series I collect and combine
these signs and examine their similar functions
and differences. By comparing the ambiguities of
physical bodies located in both intimate and public
settings, these series of drawings situate personal
desires with socio-political ones into a dialogue and
depict the ambiguous process by which the space
occupied by individuals and the space between
them becomes divided and segmented. I also
include texts from my recherches in some drawings
that point toward the ambivalence between private
and public, intimate and socio-political gestures,

Eine Berührung ist eine intimes Zeichen von Zwischenmenschlichkeit im Privaten. Die Aufteilung eine Gruppe durch eine bestimmte Körperhaltung (z.b. Niederknien als Gebetshaltung) arbeitet als ein Zeichen in der Öffentlichkeit. Das Kombinieren und Vergleichen privater und öffentlicher Körperlichkeit, die Raum aufteilt, setzt dabei Themen wie persönliche und sozial-politische Begehren zusammen ins Gespräch, und beschreibt den widersprüchlichen Prozess, indem Raum von Individuen eingenommen und aufgeteilt wird.
